Danica Patrick “Prelude to the Dream”

Eldora Speedway, Rossburg, OH (06/06/2012) Danica Patrick “Prelude to the Dream”

The end result of the “Prelude to the Dream” was a totally success! Danica finished 15th and continued to get faster and faster all night. She is an awesome person to work with and very professional. What an absolute honor for JHR. We all had a great time and raised a lot of money for Feed the Children!

Her first ever time behind the wheel of a dirt late model and basically first ever on dirt. Danica Qualified 21st quick with a time of 17.743 after only getting eight laps of total practice. I was very impressed with how quickly she caught on to everything. When she first arrived we got the seat adjusted to her liking then was able to take the car to the backstretch and get her comfortable with the transmission. After practice she told me that she thought the car felt like it was going to flip over when the weight transferred to the right side entering the corner. I knew it was going to be an awkward feeling for her but explained how the rear-ends work in these cars to give her a better understanding of how the car reacts. I also told her to just go at her own pace and walked her through an aerial shot of Eldora to show her different characteristics of the speedway. The heat race was going really well and she continued to get faster ever lap. On lap eight of ten of the heat she entered turn one just a little too high and the wall sucked her in forcing her to come to a stop in turn two. There was no major damage from the incident and we quickly had the car back rolling again. Eldora speedway has bit me more than I can even count and I expressed to her that every driver finds the wall at Eldora at least once. She felt really bad about the situation but I told her the car was fine and we didn’t lose any performance from it. Her goal for the feature was to get just seat time, not tear up the race car, and finish the race…and she did just that. She continued to get faster as the race went on and showed good car control dodging multiple wrecks in front of her. When it was all said and done she successfully finished the race 15th out of 26 drivers. It definitely took some getting used to but she proved that she is truly a professional. I was privileged and honored to coach her during her first dirt experience and most importantly we helped raise a lot of money for Feed the Children! Special thanks to Go Daddy and .ORG for their contribution.

Danica Patrick- Question
You’ve finished your first Prelude. What did you learn from start to finish?
“I realized early that I wasn’t really in the mix, so I figured I would take the chance to get comfortable driving sideways a little bit more as I’ve found that that helps in driving a stock car. I was just feeling it out and I really wanted to bring the car home without balling it up. I sort of did that. It was a good experience for me but, more than anything, I’m proud to be a part of this event. Tony is definitely my role model for charity work. This is a big deal. It’s very cool that he puts this on, and it’s obviously his party, but he invites all of his friends and that’s cool.”
