Jon Henry to Drive for Lawrence Motorsports in Select Races This Season

ADA, OH (3/30/11) – Former Sunoco American Late Model Series Champion Jon Henry has been tabbed to pilot the Lawrence Motorsports #11 in select races for the 2011 racing season.

Henry, who has won a track or series championship each of the last four seasons, will be wheeling the Mike Lawrence-owned entry in at least 15 Sunoco ALMS events this season opening April 16th at Eldora Speedway. Past drivers of the of the western Ohio based #11 have included, among others, Brian Ruhlman, Jerry Bowersock, Duane Chamberlain, Ben Adkins, and most recently Keith Berner. 2011 marks Lawrence’s ’30 years’ with his involvement in dirt racing as a car owner.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity,” Henry said. “Mike has been around the sport for a long time and has won multiple ALMS and Eldora Speedway Championships, so I feel I can really learn a lot from his program. We both have black front end Rockets, so there shouldn’t be any problem getting comfortable in his car. For me, it’s an opportunity to split time between cars and to race more races.”

In addition to his new ride, Henry’s 2011 “Share The Experience” tour is in full swing. Appearances at local mall shows have been well received and Henry recently took the opportunity to speak with three different groups of students at Lima North Middle School about the math and science involved in racing.

“I’m a race car driver, and I use a lot of math and science, so it helps when I can relate it to these students, letting them know this is a lot of the stuff I use,” Henry told a local newspaper.

In addition, Henry is allowing the students to submit their designs for a math and science-based paint scheme on his car. Henry and Kurt Wilson, of Wide open Graphics, will choose the winning design in early June. The student whose design is selected will receive suite VIP passes complimentary of the University of Northwestern Ohio for the race called the ‘Dream’ at Eldora Speedway June 10th and 11th.

Those interested in appearances by Henry as well as those wanting to learn more about the team’s marketing partnership opportunities, should contact JHR Ltd at teamdev@jonhenryracing.com.

JHR Teaching Students

Henry gives Arts Magnet students insight to racing

http://varsity.limaohio.com/articles/racing-6366-gives-students.html

LIMA — For every student in the arts magnet at Lima North Middle School who thinks he or she won’t need math or science later in life, there was Jon Henry with a very cool example of why he or she might.
The race car driver from Ada put on three presentations for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders Tuesday on the physics and math behind race cars and the sport. It was the first time Henry had ever done such a thing, and the reception from students, teachers and Henry was positive.
“When I teach math and science, it’s very crucial in racing. So when a teacher is up here, he’s trying to explain to his students, ‘Jon Henry was in here and he talked a lot about friction, and they use a lot of this friction in general. This is how it applies right here,’” Henry said. “It’s giving real life scenarios to the kids sitting in back who are saying, ‘We’re never going to use this. Can we just forget about it?’ No, Jon Henry was in here and he explained how he uses friction, aerodynamics, momentum, a lot of algebraic forms.”
In school, Henry said he was strong in math and science caught his attention.
“I’m a race car driver, and I use a lot of math and science, so it helps when I can relate it to these students, letting them know this is a lot of the stuff I use,” he said.
Henry, who races Late Models and was a UMP Modified champ at Limaland Motorsports Park, was dressed in his racing fire suit and brought along his helmet, HANS device, gloves and a tire. His presentation, including videos, photos, graphics and bullet-points, focused on the forces at work when the race car hits the track, including friction and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
It gave the teachers who set up the visit — Jan Sanford, Michelle Lotz, Brittany Martz and Dan Edwards — a chance to let a speaker reinforce the lessons they’ve been teaching. It’s a tact they try to use often at the arts magnet, according to Sanford.
“The kids are just naturally interested in someone like Jon, someone who does something like real-life auto racing, and it just makes it more concrete when he can talk about math and science, things we’ve been talking about in class,” said Sanford, a fifth and sixth grade teacher in the arts magnet. “He can actually say how he uses it in real life. They’re just fascinated by that. He did a wonderful job.
“Mr. Edwards had been talking about acceleration in class, the sixth graders had been using formulas in class. This is a real-life example with Jon because he showed them how he uses formulas.”
Henry met with the staff at the arts magnet twice, which helped him refine and build his presentation. After Tuesday, he had an even better idea of what could work for future possible school visits.
The incentive to be involved with racing and math and science didn’t end when Henry left, though. With his employer Wide Open Graphics, Henry is conducting a contest among students to design a wrap for his Late Model car with a math-and-science theme. The winning entry will be picked by Henry and Kurt Wilson, owner of Wide Open Graphics.
In early June, the newly designed car will come to North Middle School to show off the winning student’s design. The winner will also receive tickets to a local race to cheer on Henry.
“It’s a great opportunity for these students to design a race car and actually see their own car,” Henry said.
After his day at school was done, Henry began hearing of other possible opportunities to talk with students in the area. It’s something he’d like to do once or twice a week, perhaps.
For Henry, it’s a win-win situation — he can use his knowledge to educate children while at the same time exposing them to a new sport and drumming up interest in dirt track racing and his own team from a largely untapped demographic.
“A lot of people are putting their heads down, they’re thinking dirt track racing is slowly decreasing and the numbers are falling, but it’s so exciting, it’s so fun,” Henry said. “So maybe we need to be in here talking to the younger generation, letting them know what we do, getting them excited.

Best of Show

Findlay Mall Show (3/14/2011) – We won best of show at the Findlay Mall this weekend. It was a great opportunity to showcase our new Wide Open Graphics wrap and sign a ton of autographs. I feel it was the most successful meet and greet that we have done so far. I just couldn’t believe how many autograph cards were taken over the weekend. Roughly 400 cards we signed! But were ready to get back in action in a couple weeks and I also have some exciting news to share later this week.
