First Win of 2010! Oakshade Results.

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 9:13 am

May 22nd- Oakshade Raceway (Wauseon, OH) 39 cars including NASCAR driver Ken Schrader. Drew a 17 and started 2nd in the second heat race. Had a strong run and lead all ten laps for the heat race win. The racing surface was choppy right through the center due to all the rain the track had received but the top and bottom groove was pretty racy. I redrew the number one starting spot for the feature. Ideally the best place to be but hard to read where the fastest line on the race track is. When the race started I commanded out front running right around the bottom till a caution on lap five. Oakshades double file restarts had bunched the field back together. Once racing resumed the outside polesitter Kevin Reeves proved that the top was the fast place to be as he took over the lead. I continued to work the bottom but wasn’t gaining any ground on the leader so I decided to ride the highside. After a couple laps on the top I was able to close the distance in on Kevin and capitalize on a bobble he made in turn three. I regained the lead and continued to set the pace more through the middle of the track. A couple late cautions had me on my toes as UMP points leader Rusty Schlenk had moved into the second position. But after a final double file restart with a couple laps to go I was able to successfully hang on for my first win of 2010! We continue to improve each night out with this car and I’m really happy with the way things have progressed. Now that we have the first one off our back hopefully we can carry this momentum into this coming weekend.

Eldora Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 3:13 pm

May 15th- Eldora Speedway (Rossburg OH) 30 cars, Qualified fast time with a 17.5, fastest time I have set at Eldora with my modified. Won my heat race and felt like I was the car to beat. Eldora decided to invert six for the feature which started me in sixth. Once the race started I never really got in the groove with caution after caution. A car had passed me on the inside I then dropped down to pass him back on the inside. Contact was made causing both of us to spin. Neither of us had stopped on the track but the caution flag had already waved sending us both to the tail. I resumed from the tail and was just trying to be patient but unfortunately it doesn’t matter how patient you are sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time. A car had spun in front of me leaving me with a destroyed right side. Definitely frustrating but part of the game, I’ll learn from my mistakes and move on. Had a good time signing autographs for all kids for family fun night.

Eldora Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 8:26 pm

May 12th- Eldora Speedway (Rossburg OH) 40 cars, also included NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. I drew a 165 and started 9th in the second heat race. Bad night to start in the back as the race track had a ton of moisture in it from all the rain earlier in the day. Which made for a hammer down hard to pass kind of track. In the heat race I slowly worked my way to the fourth and final transfer spot. I was hoping for a few cautions to bunch the field back together but a green to checker run was what I had to work with. The 4th place finish started me a long ways back in the 14th place position for the feature. The best time to make the most passing is at the start of the race and we had three complete restarts. In the first two I had great starts being able to grab about 4 or 5 positions. Then the third complete restart wasn’t as great and I didn’t get the advantage I was looking for. When you start that far back and not completely hooked up on a heavy racetrack you need to pray for some cautions to keep the field close. Unfortunately there was only one caution early in the race and the rest was green flag racing. My racecar wasn’t really where I wanted to be but I was still able to successful rally from my 14th place starting position to a 5th place finish. Congrats to Tony Stewart for ‘smoking the field’ in his first modified win at Eldora. Would also like to give credit to Eldora’s track crew for a great track after dealing with what mother nature had given them. As of now I’m still unsure of my plans for this weekend but I will keep my website updated.

Eldora Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 8:14 am

May 8th- Eldora Speedway (Rossburg OH) 40 cars. Drew a 217 and was supposed to start 3rd in the first heat race but the leader elected to go to the tail which then put be on the pole. I fell back to second on the start but quickly regain the lead on lap two. Going into turn three my car liked to bottom out on entry and on lap three as soon as my car bottomed out my power steering belt sheared off causing me to almost lose control. I muscled up for the last couple laps and still managed the heat win. When the power steering belt came off the fan belt had twisted and was slipping which caused the motor to get a little warm but no harm was done. Thankful racer Brent Hole had a belt we could use to get everything back to normal. The feature lined heads up which put me on the pole and unfortunately wasn’t the best place to start as the top was the fastest all night. I knew I needed to try to get a good start and get to the top in turn one but for some reason my car was not firing very good on the starts. I fell back second and really just had to wait for the leader to make a mistake. On lap 10 Scott Orr had jumped the cushion giving me an opportunity to make the pass in the next turn. I did the famous slide job and had him cleared until I saw the caution lights come on…So close. About the only thing I could do was be patience and wait for him to maybe make another mistake. When the race resumed not only was I trying to pass the leader but I was also getting pressure from a fast Jeff Babcock. With only a couple laps remaining it was a fight to the finish but ended in a second place effort. Congrats to Scott Orr, we have few things we need to work on to get the car a little better for Wednesday when Tony Stewart comes to town. I’m sure he’ll bring his A game because he has a solid field of cars racing weekly at his speedway. Wednesday we’ll be at Eldora and I’m not exactly where we’ll be this weekend yet.

Weekend Recap

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 9:02 am

This was a weekend that proved what we are capable of this year. I finally feel like we have a nice base setup that I’m comfortable with and can work off of. So far this season we have raced five races with the late model and have successful made and finished each race with 4 out of the 5 being top 10’s and 2 of the 5 being top 5’s. I’ll tell any driver starting out you have to learn to finish races before you can learn to win races and were right where we need to be.

Oakshade Results-May 1st

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 9:01 am

May 1st- Oakshade Raceway (Wauseon OH) 35 cars. Drew a 6 and started on the pole of the third heat race. After an eight lap heat race I was able to lead every lap and secured the heat race win. I had missed the redraw because I was working on the racecar and forgot I still had to draw, so I had to start the feature in 9th. The track was a little choppy in the heat but by the feature the track crew had done a good job of smoothing things out. When the green flag was dropped I slowly started to creep my way to the front. A few cautions bunched the field back together and by that time I had made it up to second and was on the inside of a double file restart. I then stole the lead from leader Wayne Chinn and led the next five laps until a late caution waved with two laps to go. Tough decision on my part to take the inside or the outside on the last double file restart. I had previously choose the outside and made the high line work in turn one and two. The new rule was just put in place that the leader should fire first whether they choose the inside or outside. Well with two to go I choose the outside and the inside line fired before me leaving me with no time to recovery and no one was penalized for jumping early. An unfortunate 3rd place finish for us as I felt like we had the car to beat. This was big learning experience for me as I don’t blame the drivers for firing early, I blame the track officials for not making the new rule clear. Move on to next week.

Attica Results-April 30th

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 8:59 am

Attica Raceway Park (Attica OH) 29 cars. Drew a 30 and started 6th in the third heat race. Had a strong heat race and on a fast race track it was hard to pass but managed a 4th place finished. Drew a 4th place starting position for the feature. The race did not start out so great as I was hit in my left front which bent my upper control arm, broke the ball joint and I lost the bottom cup that holds my spring in place. Well after all that mess I was at least still able to continue in 4th place with a very uncomfortable racecar. As laps closed in the first and second place cars both had mechanical problems and dropped out of the race. With five laps to go Dusty Moore and I ran door to door all the way to the finish. Coming out of turn four to cross the finish line I was a nose short of getting my first Late Model win of the season. Congrats to Dusty for his first win of the season.
