Tough Weekend.

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 12:36 pm

Limaland cancelled Friday night and was rescheduled for Saturday night which made for a tough situation. We were supposed to race the Late Model at Oakshade Raceway on Saturday night but I made the decision Saturday morning to race the Modified at Limaland. My decision was based off all the families and friends already committed to Limaland, the opportunity to win some good money, and the history Limaland has been for my racing career. This ultimately was a tough decision for me to make because no matter what I decided I was letting someone down, so I apologize to those who were disappointed. To top it all off the racing didn’t go so well. I had carburetor problems all night and struggled to even make the race. I ended up starting 20th in the feature and finishing 8th. After the Feature Limaland had their “King of The Quarter Mile” race paying $2,000 to win for everyone that had won a race during the year and I had won a race back in June. They drew numbers for starting positions and I had to start sixth out of six cars. My dad was racing our backup car on Saturday and I decided to get in it for the “kings” race. There was something wrong in the steering of that car and I continued to struggle and finished 5th in the ten lap shootout. It was a disappointing night for me as I expected to do better but it brings me back to reality that failure is what it takes to succeed. I’ll move on and focus on this weekend.

Merritt Speedway-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 10:04 pm

Aug 22nd-Merritt Speedway (Merritt MI), (ALMS) Sunoco America Late Model Series event. 40 cars were in attendance. I drew a number twelve and would start third in the first heat race. This was also my first time ever at this speedway. The heat race started out a little shaky but good end result. I got into second off the start and almost looped it out in turn three but was able to save it. I charged back up to make the pass for the lead and grab the heat race win. I redrew the number eight starting position for the feature. Merritt’s race track holds a lot of moisture and with drizzling rain all day it kept the race track very fast. In the feature I got a great first start and was up to fifth until the caution came out giving us a complete restart. The second start wasn’t as good and after the second lap I had broke a left rear shock and really started to struggle from that point. I went back to around 12th and my main goal was just to finish the race. Luckily I was able to hold a decent line and work my way back up to an 8th place finish. Can’t complain with the circumstances that we were given, will move on and focus on this weekend.

Winston Speedway-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 9:15 am

Aug 21st-Winston Speedway (Winston MI), (ALMS) Sunoco America Late Model Series event. 33 cars were in attendance. I drew a number twelve and would start third in the third heat race. This was my first time ever at this speedway so I had to make quick adjustments during hotlaps. The heat went well I rolled into second on the start and found a groove on the top side and made the pass for the lead. I started to pull away from the field until a late caution brought us back together, but when racing resumed I held my line and pulled off the heat win. I redrew the number two starting position for the feature which was idle as the top side seemed to be the fastest way around the speedway. I grabbed the quick lead off the start until several cautions keeps us all together. We then had a long green run and I was able to pull away until I reached lap traffic. I felt pressure from behind as I tried to work through the field. A caution came out with eight laps to go and I maintained the lead. When we resumed racing and I was able to lead every lap and pull off my third Sunoco win and my seventh win of the season! It’s a really cool feeling to go to a race track for the very first time and pull off a win. I would like to thank Winston Speedway and their fans, they made me feel welcome! I would also like to thank Shane and Jennifer Halcomb, UNOH, JEGS, Professional Drywall, and Wide Open Graphics for all their support.

Oakshade Raceway Win-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 9:12 pm

Aug 15th-Oakshade Raceway (Wauseon OH), 35 cars were in attendance. I drew a number 49 which put me 7th in the first heat race. In the heat there was a caution after the first lap was completed and I was already up to second! The rest of the race went caution free and I finished second behind Brian Ruhlman. I redrew the number four starting position for the feature. On the start I was able to grab the quick lead coming out of turn four on the first lap. We had a caution on lap two and a single file restart with me pacing the field. That was the last caution we saw. The race went 24 green flag laps and we pulled off our third consecutive win at Oakshade! Not only three wins in a row but with three different racecars! Man, were really getting things dialed in and my comfort level has improved a ton over the last couple months. I hope we can continue this momentum into some big races at the end of the year. I would like to give a special thanks to Shane and Jennifer Halcomb, UNOH, JEGS, Professional Drywall, and Wide Open Graphics for all their support and I would also like to thank Oakshade Raceway and the fans.

Hartford Speedway-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 10:04 pm

Aug 14th-Hartford Speedway (Hartford MI), 23 cars were in attendance. I drew a number 42 which put me 7th in the second heat. The heat went green to checker and after ten laps I was able to make it up to a 3rd place finish. I would then start 8th in the main event. The race track was in good condition but the big half mile is still a tricky place to pass. 20 laps was the destination so I had no time to wait around. After several cautions had bunched up the field I was quickly able climb into the third position with nine laps to go. Nine laps later I maintained my position and brought home a successful third place finish.

Attica Raceway Park-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 11:22 am

Aug 7th-Attica Raceway Park (Attica OH), 22 cars were in attendance. I drew a number 28 and would start 4th in the third heat race. The heat went green to checker and I struggled with racecar but managed a 3rd place finish. The race track had some good moisture in it and had a cushion built up. By the feature the track had slicked off and with the cushion the top was the fastest place to be which makes it hard to pass. I redrew the number four starting spot for the feature. We had threat of rain all night and when we were rolling on track it had started to sprinkle. I had a good start and was up to 2nd after the first lap chasing down the leader. We started running into lap traffic rather quickly and it was really making things interesting. I was able to take the lead for a moment until the caution came out. Cautions played a big factor as we would go a couple laps then the caution would come back out. On the restart with about five laps to go I had a good run in turn one and two and was side by side for the lead going down the back stretch. I tried the slid job but couldn’t get it to stick. With not enough time to make up ground I had to settle for a second place finish. We were racing the new car tonight and still have some things to work on, but we had a good night. Congrats to Ryan Missler on his win. We’ll be at Oakshade tonight going for three in a row.

Oakshade Raceway Win-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 12:02 pm

Aug 1st-Oakshade Raceway (Wauseon OH), (ALMS) Sunoco America Late Model Series event. 37 cars were in attendance. I drew a number seven and was going to start on the front row of the heat but an unfortunate change of events occurred. In hotlaps I started losing power in my motor and it started to smoke. I shut it off and tried starting it again but it was locked up. Not a good way to start off the night when you’re leading the ALMS point standings. There was no time to change motors and no time to drive home to get the backup car. My only decision was to find someone to let me drive their car and try to salvage a few points. I was really disappointed and couldn’t find anyone to let me drive their car, but then thankfully Bryan Koebbe who drives the number 33 Rocket Chassis decided to set aside for the night and let me pilot his racecar. I can’t thank Bryan enough, for the circumstances he gave me the best situation I could be in. His racecar was similar to mine and all I had to do was get comfortable in the seat. Let’s just say it didn’t take long. I had to start at the tail of the second heat race since I had to change cars. With a ten lap caution free heat race I was able to get comfortable and get this…we won the heat race! It was almost too good to be true already, one minute I felt like my season was going to be playing catch-up with the ALMS points to now I had a chance to extend my points lead. I redrew a number four starting position for the feature. I knew if I was patience and drove smart there was no reason we couldn’t pull off a top five finish. And we did one better than that…I took the lead half way through the race and won my second ALMS feature event! Man how things can change fast. I feel everything happens for a reason and this was a very special night! I want to give a big special thank you to Bryan Koebbe for letting me drive his racecar! Next week we go for three in a row at the shade.

Hartford Speedway-Results

Filed under: JHR Blogs — jon @ 3:01 pm

July 31st- Hartford Speedway (Hartford MI), (ALMS) Sunoco America Late Model Series event. 31 cars were in attendance. I drew a 29 which gave me a 6th place starting spot in the third heat race. The heat went green to checkered and I was able to make it up to a 3rd place finish, one spot short of the redrew giving me a 9th place starting position for the feature. If you’ve never been to Hartford Speedway it’s a big ½ mile with long straightaways with momentum turns. The race track can be very fast and can be tricky to pass. This was only my second time that this speedway and it takes some good seat time to learn how to race around it. Not only was I newer to the track but it was also my first time in our new car. A lot of adjustments all at once but we couldn’t have asked for anything more. A long 45 lap feature was among us, patience and finishing the race was key. After long race with a handful of cautions I was able to race my way up to a 3rd place finish! It was one of those nights we just wanted to survive and we were really happy with a 3rd. I would like to give a special thanks to Lane Automotive for their support and all the money they put up for this event!
